See Her Story: Women in Christian Art

Join Drs. Sandra Glahn and Lynn Cohick on a 15-day tour of Italy exploring the art of the early and medieval church focusing on its depiction of women and the church’s spiritual practices and worship patterns. The tour supplements the work of the Visual Museum of Women in Christianity by gathering images and research for its collection. Also, there will be lots of gelato!
Accommodations include monasteries in the heart of the city and are booked for the group; prices quoted are for double occupancy/ensuite bathrooms (single rooms only on request for an additional charge). Click here for an example of accommodations.
Cost includes ensuite rooms inclusive of breakfast, most lunches and dinners, museum entrance fees, and travel within Italy.
Deposit of $300 per required to secure a spot on the trip. Deposit is refundable until May 31st. We anticipate providing the final cost on May 1st to allow travelers a one-month period to consider the final details of the trip. Deposits become nonrefundable on June 1st.
HIGHLIGHTS
Exploring Rome (including visiting the Vatican, San Clemente, Basilica of Praxedes, Mamertine Prison, Catacombs), Orvieto (including the duomo and its three-story facade of mosaics, Assisi, Siena, Civita di Bagnoregio), Florence (including visiting Uffizi and Santa Maria Novella), Vicenza, Venice and the island of Torcello, as well as Pompeii, Padua, Milan, Siena, and Ravenna. Please note that all itinerary specifics are subject to change. Accommodations include monasteries and hotels.

December 27: TRAVEL
Embark on your flight to Rome (FCO).
December 28 – January 2: ROME
Upon your arrival in Rome, the group will gather for orientation and enjoy a welcome dinner. We will spend five nights in Rome at Casa Santa Brigida as we explore the Vatican, multiple churches, and Pompeii.

January 2 – 5: ORVIETO
Journeying on to Orvieto, we will spend three nights at Instituto San Lodovico while touring churches and spending a day in Civita di Bagnoreggio, Assisi and Siena.

January 5 – 8: FLORENCE
Three nights at the Holiday House of the Oblate of the Assumption provides opportunity to absorb the beauty of Florence and bask in its art and architecture.

January 8-9: VICENZA
We will spend one night at Hotel Victoria in Vicenza, seeing the best icon exhibit outside of Russia, and exploring Ravenna, developing an appreciation for the martyrs memorialized in the UNESCO mosaics of multiple sites that include The Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo.

January 9 – 12: VENICE
Our final destination is Venice, the City of Canals. We will spend three nights at Foresteria Valdese di Venezia [hyperlink] as we explore the island of Torcello and sites of significance to our understanding of how art shapes our theology, including the city’s famous Black Madonna.

January 12: TRAVEL
Depart from Venice (VCE) to home.
