This new statue is a newly imagined reproduction of the original eighteenth-century statue by Pier Paolo Campi that was destroyed in the bombing of Monte Cassino in 1944 during World War II. The only one of Campi’s many statues at the location that partially survived was one of St. Benedict. Saint Scholastica is shown alongside her brother, Saint Benedict in the Cloister of Paradise, the entrance to Monte Cassino. There is a halo over her head indicating her status as a saint. In her right hand she holds the Rule of St. Benedict that she adapted for women at her convent. The dove represents the way her brother saw her soul ascend to heaven the day of her death.
