Anne and Joachim present their daughter Mary at the temple.
Although not recognized as canonical, the Protoevangelium of James tells of the immaculate conception and life of Mary. Contained in this book is the story of Anne and Joachim presenting their three-year-old daughter, Mary, at the Temple. At this presentation, Joachim invited the “undefiled” daughters of the Hebrews, who are wearing blue and standing to the right of the priest. Anne and Joachim look affectionately yet somberly at their daughter, knowing they will soon depart from her forever; and yet Mary, only a toddler, confidently looks down at her mother, as if in a position of authority.
