Mary is depicted wearing a simple red patterned dress with a blue headress and shawl; she is holding a book inscribed with the Magnificat.
As was common in Renaissance art, Mary is illustrated in a patterned red dress and blue shall. The pattern on her dress includes small, eight-pointed stars, which symbolize eternity. Surrounding her is a delicate gold halo and intricate background, reminding us of her elegance and majesty. Under her robe, her stomach is slightly rounded, indicating that she is pregnant. She smiles as she reads the Magnificat, contemplating all that is unfolding within her. Mary’s hand graciously extends over the parapet, as if entering our space. This represents her unique role for humankind: she compassionately connects us to God through birthing Christ.
