This more contemporary piece featuring Saint Clare hangs in contrast to the other early Renaissance images at the abbey. The bright colors capture the eye and draw the viewer to focus on the Host container that Clare is holding up. Clare’s gaze is also on the container, as it holds the Body of Christ. She trusts completely that placing the Host between the Saracen attackers and her sisters is their only and best defense.
Clare is dressed in all white, which is different than most images representing her. White represents her purity and piety as she places her trust in the Lord for deliverance. Some sources recount that she thought of her nuns as defenseless children as she prayed that evening, and heard the voice of a child respond, “I will always have them in my care.”
