This piece is located in the Dormitory of St. Clare where the sisters slept on the floor on straw mats. Clare died in this location on August 11, 1253, surrounded by her Franciscan brothers and sisters. The real-life event would not have included a bed as the art suggests due to Clare’s insistence on extreme piety. Two days before, Pope Innocent IV visited the frail Clare and presented her with the document approving her written Rule.
Depicted in the top left of this piece is the vision of the Virgin and the saints that Clare received in her final moments. Clare passed away singing after 28 years of sickness due to malnutrition. “Go safely in peace my blessed soul…and you, Lord, be blessed for you created me.”
