This fresco resides in a chapel that Clare had built and dedicated to the Holy Virgin. It was painted after a community of friars took occupation after her death. Clare is painted approaching the vestibule where the ciborium containing the reserved Host was held. Clare prays for deliverance from the approaching Saracen attackers with one hand appealing to the Host, while the other points to the sisters behind her, petitioning for their survival.
Clare's brave act to approach the enemy holding the Host not only saved San Damiano, but the entire town. The architecture of the monastery also speaks to her great courage and action, as the sisters were trapped in an inner room and Clare would have had to descend quickly from the dormitory to the ground level on dangerous stonestairs while she was very ill from her extreme fasting practices.
