Æthelburh of Kent, Ethelburga, was the daughter of Queen Bertha and King Æthelberht, the royal couple who were instrumental in converting the country to Christianity with the help of St. Augustine of Canterbury. Ethelburga married King Edwin of Northumbria and under the influence of his wife's faith, Edwin converted to Christianity. After his death, Ethelburga either founded or joined a double monastery of nuns and monks at Lyminge, where she served as abbess until her death in 647. Other saints associated with the community are the 7th century nuns St Mildred and St Mildgyth and though nothing remains of the abbey, the site is considered one of the oldest Christian sites in Kent.
