Mary with clerical pallium vestment; praying in the orans pose with two women wearing maniples. Some suggest the Benedictine nun, Bendetta, and the Abbess, Constanza, are portrayed just below Mary.
This painting is part of a larger, five phase piece depicting scenes from the last judgement. Here, we see Mary in the orans pose, praying among the Elect. She is also depicted in the clerical pallium, indicating she was viewed in a priestly manner. In the other four pieces of this Last Judgement painting, no one else - including the twelve apostles and Paul - wear the clerical palium. Similarly, no one in this series besides the two women flanking Mary hold a maniple. That only these two women hold maniples suggests the honorable status they held, similar to Mary.
